Fire Island

Many years ago my friends and family and I spent many wonderful days with Uncle Joe and Aunt Pauline at their house on Fire Island. They always warmly opened their home to us and these are some of the most cherished memories I have from my young adulthood. One summer when my daughter was quite little and when Uncle Joe's grandchildren were also very young, we were headed to the beach from their house. We had settled in on the sand, when from over the dune, here came Uncle Joe, dressed in this ridiculous full body bathing suit, as if it were from the 1920s! It was horizontally striped black and yellow and red with a singlet top and mid-thigh pants. But on his head he carried an inflatable raft. It flopped when he walked and you couldn't see anything from the neck up. I remember hearing his laugh from under the raft! He paused as he approached our blanket and said 'Let's get in the water!' and at that point he turned and ran into the surf, raft a floppin' and water a splashin'! It was quite the sight. And he played with those kids for hours that day, even though I know he had other work to do around the house. He laughed and laughed and we all had such an enjoyable time. Thank you Uncle Joe for your time and your humor and we will miss you.
