Life Story for Kenneth S. Heffley

Kenneth S. Heffley
HEFFLEY – Kenneth S., 82, Davidsville, died April 5,2014, at Memorial Medical Center, Johnstown. Born April 20, 1931, in Johnstown, son of Russell and Catharine (Seigh) Heffley. Preceded in death by parents; infant sister, Phyllis Arlene; and brothers, Russell and Paul. Survived by wife, Eileen (Wetzel); sisters, Dorothy Miller, and Joanne Segalavich, and her husband, William; niece, Mary Jane Haller, and her family; nieces and nephews through his brother, Russell; and his cousin, Ray Clites. A graduate of Westmont High School. Ken received a master’s of divinity degree from Yale University. He then served as an ordained pastor for over 10 years in the United Church of Christ in York and Somerset County. He received a master’s of social work from the University of Pittsburgh. Upon leaving the ministry, he became employed by Intermediate Unit 8, where he worked as a school social worker with children and families in need. He was employed there for 32 years and retired in 1997. During his retirement, Ken discovered his dad’s historical photographs of Johnstown covering a time span of decades from 1924 to the mid 1950’s. (Russell Heffley was a commercial photographer.) Ken began to work on a book of his own to, in his words, “share them with the reader to preserve the images and their historical value and simply to recognize his father, Russell Heffley, for his legacy." As author, Ken added a chapter of “Then and Now” serving as photographer for the “now” scenes. There were numerous exhibitions of his dad’s historic photographs in both Cambria and Somerset counties. To view them, go to http://digital.library.pitt.edu/images/pittsburgh/heffley.html. Ken and Eileen had been married for 43 years. He shared with his wife his love of the Laurel Mountains and the outdoors. He loved to hunt and fish with his sister, Joanne, and enjoyed many lunches with his sister, Dorothy, after which they would walk and admire her flower gardens. Ken loved his own flower gardens and enjoyed working in them every summer. He was an avid reader and lover of history. His favorite charity was the Special Olympics. Ken was a very loving husband, brother and friend. We will all miss him very much. Funeral arrangements will be private. Donations in Ken’s memory may be sent to Special Olympics by calling (800) 380-3071 or to Johnstown Symphony Orchestra by calling 535-6738. Arrangements by Hoffman Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Davidsville. To express condolences, make a donation or light a candle, visit HoffmanFuneralHomes.com
