GALLO – Paul R., Jr., 86, Veterans Home, Hollidaysburg, formerly of Hollsopple, died Nov. 23, 2010 , at the home. Born Nov. 16, 1924, in Hollsopple, son of Paul Sr. and Pauline (Scolora) Gallo. Preceded in death by parents; brothers, Sam and Mike; sister, Sadie Vancovich; and sister-in-law, Virginia Gallo. Survived by brother, Joseph, Hollsopple; sister, Magdaline Schatte, St. Louis, Mo.; and numerous nieces and nephews. A graduate of Conemaugh Township Area High School. Joined the U.S. Army Air Force on Aug. 9, 1943. Received training at the Army War College in Carlisle. Attended Army Air Force School of Aircraft Armament and Arial Gunnery at Fort Myers, Fla. Served with the 823rd Bomber Squad in the South Pacific Theater during World War II and received two Battle Stars. He also was an assistant crew chief on engine repair and repaired guns when necessary. Worked in various coal mines in this area and also worked on the oar boats on the Great Lakes until becoming ill. He then spent most of his life in the VA Hospital in Pittsburgh and the Hollidaysburg VA Home. Member of St. Anne Catholic Church, Davidsville, and was a charter member of the Hollsopple Post 8861, VFW. Viewing from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hoffman Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 109 Church Road, Davidsville, where a vigil for the deceased will be held 5 p.m. Friday. Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Anne Church with the Rev. Father Michael Lewandowski, OFM, Conv., celebrant.
