John "Cun"  Szapka
SZAPKA – John “Cun,” 88, Hollsopple, passed away at his home Jan. 25, 2016. Born July 3, 1927, in Jerome, son of Nick and Kathryn (Szapka) Szapka. Preceded in death by parents; brothers, Walter, Steve and Mike; and sister, Julia Berkey. Survived by wife of 54 years, Delores (Seganos) Szapka; daughters, Veronica Szapka, at home; and Patti, married to Daniel Thomas, Davidsville; grandchildren, Daniel Thomas Jr., Pittsburgh; Megan, and fiance, Travis Hawthorne, Peoria, Ariz.; and Todd Thomas, Davidsville; sister, Olga, married to Frank Roman, Wilbur; and brother-in-law, John Seganos, and wife, Maria, Mesa, Ariz.; also numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank John’s caregivers, Tammy, Kelly and Elaine, for all their compassionate care. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Former iron worker for Iron Workers Union Local 3 and laborer for Laborers Union 910. Retired coal miner for Jandy Coal, Windber. Member of UMWA. Former member of SS. Peter & Paul Orthodox Church, Windber. John enjoyed gardening and attending his grandchildren’s activities. Viewing will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hoffman Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 109 Church Road, Davidsville, where funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, the Very Rev. Father Miles P. Zdinak, presiding. Military honors by Somerset County Honor Guard. Interment, St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Cemetery, Windber.
