Life Story for Stefanie Smaila

Stefanie  Smaila
SMAILA – Stefanie, 90, Meyersdale, formerly of Jerome, died Dec. 10, 2014, at Lutheran Home at Johnstown. Born Dec. 22, 1923, in Rupa, Italy (now Croatia), daughter of Josip and Katarina (Pozar) Smaila. Preceded in death by parents; husband of 46 years, Carlo “Drago” Smaila on July 21, 1993, and brothers, Miro and Oton. Survived by children, John, Meyersdale; Frank, and wife, Jeanene, Mesa, Ariz.; and Kathy, married to Stephen Spack, Johnstown, and numerous nieces and nephews in Slovenia, Croatia and Massachusetts. In December 1955, Stefanie emigrated to America with her husband and family where they settled in Jerome. She was a longtime member of former Holy Cross Catholic Church, Jerome, and St. Anne Catholic Church, Davidsville. Current member of SS. Philip & James Catholic Church, Meyersdale, and a 55-year member of SNPJ Lodge 289, Tire Hill. Stefanie enjoyed knitting, crocheting, baking and playing bingo. She also enjoyed singing and dancing to polka music with her husband at picnics and dances. Viewing from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Hoffman Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 409 Main St., Boswell, where a vigil for the deceased will be held Sunday afternoon. Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Anne Church, Davidsville, the Rev. Father Martin Cingle, celebrant. Committal, Holy Cross Cemetery, Jerome.
