Life Story for Brigid Ann "Brigie" Slobozien

SLOBOZIEN – Brigid “Brigie” Ann, 59, LaurelWood Care Center, Westmont, formerly of Belmont, died Sept. 22, 2014, at Memorial Medical Center. Born Oct. 31, 1954, in Johnstown. Preceded in death by mother, Cora (Start) Slobozien. Survived by father, Peter J. Slobozien, Johnstown; sisters, Dona, married to Patrick Higgins, Johnstown, and Sharon Slobozien, Oakton, Va.; nieces, Samantha Coyne, Pittsburgh, and Jennifer Higgins, Johnstown; nephew, Lt. Col. Joshua Higgins, Ewa Beach, Hawaii; and great-nieces and nephews, Zachary Higgins, Savannah Lukas, Hadleigh Coyne and Olivia and Jack Higgins. Brigid contracted encephalitis when she was eight years old. She was in a coma for eight weeks in Children’s Hospital, Pittsburgh, and when she came out of the coma, she had severe brain damage. Her parents dedicated their entire lives to her comfort and care. When it became too difficult for them to care for her at home, she was placed in Good Samaritan Nursing Care Center and later in LaurelWood. Her parents continued to visit her every day to feed her supper and prepare her for bed. When her mother died in 2011, Brigid’s sisters continued to visit her daily to tend to her needs. Even though “Brigie” was severely brain damaged, she developed her own sweet personality, oftentimes putting her arm around your neck and placing her lips on your face. Brigie was greatly loved by her family, and the sadness is only relieved by the thought that she is now with her mother. In life they were inseparable, and in death they are joined again. A funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Friday at St. Benedict Catholic Church, Geistown, Father David Peles, celebrant. Committal, Grandview Cemetery. Arrangements by Hoffman Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Davidsville. In lieu of flowers, donations in Brigid’s memory may be sent to St. Benedict School, 2306 Bedford St., Johnstown, Pa. 15904.
