Obituary

DARR – Shelley W., 67, Jenner Township, died unexpectedly April 24, 2020 at his home. Born February 12, 1953 in Somerset. Son of Frank C., Jr. and Helen (Schrock) Darr. Preceded in death by parents; sister Carol Salley and her husband Richard and brother-in-law Merle “Butch” Mostoller. Survived by wife of nearly 45 years Metta J. (Mostoller) Darr; daughter Amanda married to Bob Landis, Jenner Township; grandsons Heath and Hayden; brother Barry Darr married to Barbara Lynne (Wiester), Somerset; sister Peggy married to Dwight “Whitey” Gardner, Jenner Township; sister-in-law Peggy Mostoller, Somerset; nieces and nephews Rachael Mostoller, Greta (Kermit) Stahl, Lyle (Missy) Gardner, Todd (Jennifer) Gardner, Drew (Chris) Gardner, Bradley Darr, Bobbie (Mark) Bernat, Ricki (John) Garrety and Joel (Janise) Salley. Shelley was a 1971 graduate of Jenner-Boswell High School and attended the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. He was a dedicated employee of Standard Steel, Latrobe where he negotiated many contracts for the office staff throughout his 31 years of service. He was one of the last employees to walk out of the gate when the plant shut down. He then earned his CDL license and was employed by Jenner Township and later was elected Jenner Township Supervisor for 2 terms. Member of Mt. Laurel United Church of Christ, near Gray, where he served on the church council. Also a member of Jenner Community Park Board, Somerset Lodge 358 F. & A.M., Somerset Aerie 1801 Fraternal Order of Eagles and was a leader for Steaks & Chops 4-H. Shel was a family man who was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son-in-law, brother and uncle. He was a Laurel Arts Dance Dad and Soccer Coach for his daughter Amanda. He put many Legos together with his grandsons and attended their football, basketball, t-ball and baseball games and wrestling meets. He helped them with their 4-H animal projects and spent many hours creating their Halloween costumes. Shel was a jack of all trades. He could fix just about anything. Sometimes he would have to study and think about the problem for a while but he seemed to always come up with a solution. He was an avid solver of Sudoku puzzles, crossword puzzles, Crypto Quotes and hidden word puzzles. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, brother, sister and brother-in-law on many bus trips. He will be greatly missed by his wife and family. Due to current public health restrictions, a private viewing will be held. A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Interment Somerset County Memorial Park. Arrangements by Hoffman Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Boswell. In lieu of flowers, donations in Shelley’s memory may be sent to Mt. I was so very sorry to hear about Shelley's passing today. Due to the virus, we are working from home, so I missed seeing this in the paper. Please accept my deepest sympathies to all of you. I enjoyed working with Shelley throughout his years as a Jenner Township Supervisor. He was the most pleasant person to work with, always smiling, always kind, always so very helpful with our projects that we worked on together! I am so very sorry for your loss. This is truly a sad time. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Sincerely, Patty Adamczyk (Redevelopment Authority of Somerset County)

Dear Metta, Amanda and family,
Sending you our deepest sympathy for the loss of your beloved husband and father. Since high school, Shelley has been one of the nicest people I've had the privilege to know. I remember once having car trouble and pulling into the township parking lot. Shelley came over and did his best to calm me while he figured out what was wrong. After searching through the car's manual, he fixed the problem. Thanks to Shelley, I was relieved to safely drive away. Over the years, it was always a pleasure to meet up with you both, usually at the grocery store. I always thought, "what a wonderful, loving couple" you were. May your faith comfort you and provide you with the strength to cope with the profound loss of Shelley. Sincerely, Patricia Lepley Hanes
