Obituary for Rose Perry

PERRY - Rose “Rosie, Gram, Grammy Rose, Aunt Rose,” 100, of Johnstown, died on December 9, 2023 at The Villa in Johnstown. Born March 16, 1923 in Johnstown. Daughter of Peter and Epifania “Mae” (Laposata) Mazzarese. Preceded in death by parents; loving and devoted husband, Dominick F. Perry; daughter-in-law Sharon (wife of Michael); son-in-law Jack Muslovski (husband of Frances); beloved grandson, Daniel Muslovski; sweet and funny brothers, Peter, Angelo, Samuel, Charles and John; beautiful sister Beatrice Magyar; and dear niece and nephew Barbara (Mazzarese) Lee and Angelo Mazzarese, Jr. Rose is survived by four devoted children born to her and Dominick: Frances Charlotte Muslovski, Michael Vincent Perry (Ruth Beckman), Kathleen Rose Rice, and Donald Joseph Perry (Sharon); 17 adored grandchildren, and life was doubly grand with their many great-grandchildren. Also survived by sister-in-law Vita (Perry) Giannone, a vast number of nieces and nephews, all of whom had a special love and devotion to their aunt, and her blessing of a caregiver, Karen Soliday. A graduate of Johnstown High School, Rose lived all of her 100 years in Johnstown and was married to Dominick for 62 years. She was employed for several years by Penn Traffic, but Rose was best known for her hospitality. She took great pride in her role as the matriarch of the family. She cultivated her home into a gathering place for food, drink, camaraderie, and love. No one left her house hungry! She was most revered for her Italian cooking and baking. From sauce and meatballs every single Sunday after church with family—while the Steelers played on the small kitchen TV—to chicken soup, lemon chicken, and all varieties of cookies, plus the dishes made from whatever she “had in the fridge.” Holidays were very special affairs, but she and Dominick outdid themselves each year by creating the most magical Christmas Eves ever for the grandchildren and adults. Rose was never afraid to speak her mind on any topic, which always brought forth the most colorful conversations. She couldn’t function without her news channels and cooking shows, and she could never let one leave with leftovers, wrapping the container in 14 layers of plastic wrap, securing those layers with eight gum bands, and placing the contraband in a titanium chest that she’d solder shut so that the food would not “spill in the car.” She very much enjoyed recounting funny commercials she had seen and keeping records of her family’s history, and her black coffee was best enjoyed out of a Styrofoam cup. She was so proud of the family that she and Dom created, but she once said she wished she had married Andy Griffith when she was younger. She was also Shirley Temple’s biggest fan. Rose’s family wishes to thank Tabitha at Interim Healthcare Hospice and all the caring staff at The Villa. Friends received from 4-7PM Wednesday at Hoffman Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 109 Church Road, Davidsville where vigil for the deceased will be held Wednesday. Funeral Liturgy will be held 11AM Thursday at the Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Johnstown with Rev. John J. Slovikovski, Celebrant. Committal St. Anthony’s Cemetery, Geistown. Memorial donations may be made to The Villa, 429 Napoleon Place, Johnstown, PA 15905. To express condolences, order flowers or plant a memorial tree, visit HoffmanFuneralHomes.com.
