Obituary for Merle Shaffer

SHAFFER – Merle, 89, Hollsopple, went home to be with the Lord on December 25, 2020 at Conemaugh Memorial Hospital. Born November 1, 1931 in Hollsopple. Son of Lloyd A. and Grace (Blough) Shaffer. Preceded in death by parents; sisters Rachel Miller and Ruby Berkebile and brothers Clair, Melvin, Floyd and Ralph Shaffer. Survived by loving wife of 65 years Lois E. (Mishler) Shaffer; children Lamar K. married to Pamela (Noon), Central City, Jeffery N. married to Donna (Wojnarowski), New Paris, Sherry E. married to Jim Thomas, Johnstown, Rhonda M. married to Brad Benton, Fargo, ND, Mona F. married to Don Fahnestock, Shiremanstown, Phillip M. married to Suzanne (Wilcox), Wagoner, OK and Craig A. married to Tamara (Hale), San Angelo, TX; 16 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; brother Lloyd, Jr. and wife Lois, Delaware; sisters Eva married to Roy Manges, Arizona and Thelma married to Charles Tyler, Washington and numerous nieces and nephews. Merle was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, serving from 1952-1954. He had a 30-year career as an Electrician for Bethlehem Steel. He attended The Gathering in Jerome. Merle and Lois enjoyed traveling and were able to visit every state in the U.S., except Hawaii, as well as various locations in Canada. He had a green thumb and spent countless hours in the garden and enjoyed his fishing trips and classic cars. He was a skilled tradesman in mechanics and construction, having built their home of over 60 years. At times his children thought he knew everyone, as he could strike up a conversation with anyone. He loved his wife and his family and always insured they were well cared for. His kindness and compassion will be missed by everyone. Due to Covid-19, a service will be held at a later date with inurnment at Blough Mennonite Cemetery. Arrangements by Hoffman Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Davidsville.
