Obituary

HEIPLE – Melissa R. “Mel”, 58, Jennerstown, died October 2, 2020 at In-Touch Hospice House, Somerset. Born March 7, 1962 in Somerset. Daughter of Dean H. and B. Isabelle (Gilbert) Heiple. Preceded in death by parents and sister Patricia G. on May 18, 2010, who also died from complications of a dissected aortic aneurysm. Survived by sister Margi Beth married to Joe Stephens, Hagerstown, MD and nephew Daniel Dean Stephens. A 1980 graduate of North Star High School. Employed at Somerset Hospital Emergency Room as a Unit Secretary from 1987 to 2017. A member of several volunteer fire companies. Mel enjoyed working the ambulance crew at outdoor events such as the Farmers and Thresherman’s Jubilee and the races at Jennerstown Speedway. She was also an EMT Trainer. Mel carried an undiagnosed Marfan gene variant which eventually led to multiple aortic aneurysms, one dissected, and to her death from congestive heart failure. She was kind and generous, loved to give gifts and be with her work family. As a lifelong healthcare worker, Mel did not want to put her friends and family at risk of infection. Therefore, there will be no service. She requested to be cremated and will be laid to rest next to her sister Pat, maternal grandparents and parents in the Jenner Crossroads Cemetery. We encourage her friends and family to bring her flowers there. In this time of Covid, we also request her friends to gather in small groups at her favorite restaurants and share stories of her life, well lived and cut too short. She missed you all very much. Arrangements by Hoffman Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Boswell. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mel’s memory may be sent to your local fire department. Mel and I first became friends around 35 years ago when I became an EMT with the Confluence Ambulance Service. We saw each other in the ER, at various community functions and always at the EMS Conferences at Seven Springs. You know when you meet a person that is special, one who you feel has been, is and always will be a friend no matter where life takes you -- well, to me that was Mel. There were years where our paths went different ways and then last year I got a Facebook Friend Request from her and accepted it. She wrote back that she, in fact, had not sent me one. She said that she had sent one several years ago but that I never answered her. I never had gotten that one. Well, since then we "talked" a lot on Facebook, went to doc appointments and just visited. We talked about so very many things. As it turned out I was blessed enough to spend some hours with her last week and was with her in the early afternoon of Friday, October 2nd. I am so glad I had that time with her. I miss her a lot already and have gotten up these last couple mornings and gone to my computer as I have done almost every day since we reconnected to see how she was doing and if she had sent any fur baby pictures. We usually said good night with a cute pic on facebook. That too I already miss. I know, though, that now Mel can breath, and is without pain. I know our paths will cross yet again some day.

I worked with Mel in the ER many years ago, she was sincerely one of the kindest people I have ever met. Our paths have crossed a few times since and she has always been so sweet and cheerful. She was a wonderful woman, and I am blessed to have had the opportunity to work alongside her.

To Margi and Family,
I worked with Mel for a long time in the Emergency Department. Mel was very knowledgeable and an excellent resource person that kept me up to date on my patients.
Mel, also was an excellent writer and had a special way with words. She profread and edited some of my college assingments while I was furthering my education. Actually, sometimes I felt it was her that should have been awarded the degree.
I have wonderful memories of her and she will be missed.
Please accept my condolences. Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.
