Obituary for Luther James "Jim" Sprowls

SPROWLS - Luther James “Jim”, 96, Davidsville, died December 12, 2020 at Laurel View Village. Born April 10, 1924 in Johnstown. Son of Charles R. and Mary Bess (McNary) Sprowls. Preceded in death by parents; twin brothers Albert and Alfred Sprowls; brother W. Scott Sprowls and wife Dorothy; sister Mary Ellen Rice and husband Albert and sisters-in-law Margaret and husband George Gardner, Florence and husband Jack Weyandt and Mary Hamilton. Survived by wife of 69 years Emily J. (Von Moose) Sprowls; children David V., Oregon; Joni L. and husband Mark Bloom, McKees Rocks and James K. and wife Linda, Virginia Beach; grandsons Matthew Bloom and Adam Bloom and wife Alexandra; great grandchildren Rhys, Henning and Imogen and numerous nieces and nephews. He was a 1942 graduate of Boswell High School. A U.S. Army veteran of WWII having served from 1942-1945 in the European Theater. A 1951 graduate of Penn State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering. First job upon graduating was helping to build the Knoxville, Tennessee Airport. Also worked on railroads near Salamanca, N.Y. Retired in 1983 after 30 years with Bethlehem Steel, Johnstown Plant, Engineering Dept. Several years after retirement moved to Lakeland, Florida for 28 years before returning to Davidsville. Member of the American Legion and St. David’s Lutheran Church, Davidsville. In his younger days, Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and golfing. Friends received from 10AM until time of memorial service 11AM Saturday, April 10th at St. David's Lutheran Church, Davidsville. Inurnment St. John Cemetery, Somerset with military honors by Somerset County Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers donations in his memory may be made to St. David’s Lutheran Church, Davidsville or Laurel View Village Caring Fund or Windber Hospice.
