Obituary for L. Arlene Stevens (Clapper)

STEVENS - L. Arlene (Clapper), 97, Laurel View Village, Davidsville, formerly of Pine Street, Davidsville, passed away April 26, 2021 at Laurel View Village. Born July 17, 1923 in New Enterprise. Daughter of D. Clyde and Bessie (Teeter) Clapper. Preceded in death by parents; husband of 64 years Blair E. Stevens on March 22, 2009; sisters, Virginia Reffner and Marie Hall and brother, Clyde Clapper, Jr. Survived by sons, Gary married to Orpha (Caplinger) Stevens, Manheim, PA and Michael married to Susan (Rudge) Stevens, Hollsopple; grandchildren, Jennifer Martin, Joanna Zimmerman, Kellie Reed and Jason Stevens; 10 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Doreen Steele, Florida and numerous nieces, nephews, and in-laws. Arlene was a 1941 graduate of former Replogle High School in Bedford County. Member of Maple Spring Church of the Brethren, Hollsopple where she served as a Deacon, taught Sunday school and was a member of the Women’s Fellowship. Volunteer for St. Francis Sharing and Caring. Arlene wrote the following in her own words: She enjoyed playing cards with her friends and spending time at Lake Stonycreek. Arlene was swept off her feet by her husband Blair in high school. Their young marriage was interrupted when he was drafted during WWII. Even when Blair was a prisoner of war, Arlene did not give up. After he returned home from the war, they started to build a life and raise a family. Arlene was a stay-at-home mother and wife. Lunches were always packed and supper was always ready, even after football or band practice. She was a particular housekeeper, but willing to make pizza for her sons and their friends. When Blair started with Alzheimer’s disease she lived out the wedding vows “for better or worse” and “till death do us part”. The family would like to express a heartfelt thanks to the staff of Laurel View Village for being mom’s second family. Public viewing from 1PM to 3PM Saturday at Hoffman Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 109 Church Road, Davidsville. A private service will follow. Interment Maple Spring Cemetery.
