Obituary for Florence L. Brockunier (Lohr)

BROCKUNIER – Florence L. (Lohr), 94, Jennerstown, died November 12, 2019 at Lehigh Valley Hospice, Allentown. Born August 21, 1925 in Boswell. Daughter of Lester and Gladys (Ayers) Lohr. Preceded in death by parents; husband of 66 years Griffith R. “Dick” Brockunier on February 16, 2012; sisters Frances McIntyre and Susan Lohr and brothers Lester, Robert, and William Lohr. Survived by children, Richard, and wife, Christy, Califon, NJ; Deborah, married to James Ingley, Henderson, TN.; Karen Brockunier, Manor, PA; Regina Brockunier, Allentown; Janice Brockunier, married to Michael Babler, Milwaukee, WI and Linda Brockunier, Orange, NJ; grandchildren, Ross and Keith Brockunier, Erin Rigsby and Brock and Kara Mosovsky; great grandchildren Aila and Thijs Mosovsky; brother David Lohr and wife Betty, Boswell and numerous nieces and nephews. A 1943 graduate of Boswell High School. During WWII, Florence graciously agreed to leave Penn State to assume responsibility for Cover School, a one room schoolhouse serving grades 1-8. It was through this experience that Florence discovered her true calling. After marrying her high school sweetheart—the love of her life—and while taking care of a growing family, she continued to teach in the Boswell and North Star School Districts. Years later she would emotionally recall that some of her proudest working achievements were in helping struggling students acquire the basic skills they would need. Florence and her husband designed and built their house and such was her work ethic that even well into her 70’s Florence was actively involved in replacing the roof! Beyond work she was an avid reader, gardener, and bird watcher. She and her husband traveled often to visit their six children, as well as to many national and state parks throughout 49 states, including Alaska. Her home was filled with love and she will be greatly missed. Viewing from 2-4 & 6-8PM Friday at Hoffman Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 409 Main Street, Boswell, where a service will be held 11AM Saturday with Rev. Will Foster presiding. Interment Jenner Crossroads Cemetery. Donations in Florence’s memory may be sent to Western PA Conservancy at www.waterlandlife.org.
