Obituary for Dennis W. "Denny" Thomas

THOMAS - Dennis W. “Denny”, 79 of Conemaugh Township, Somerset County, passed away peacefully on April 12, 2022 in Sun City Center, FL. He was born October 17, 1942 in Johnstown the son of the late Willard and Grace Mary (Kaltenbaugh) Thomas of Thomas Mills. He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 54 years Eloise “Weez” (Maldet) Thomas who passed away 5 years ago. He is survived by four children, Renee & Lance Oij of Apollo Beach, Florida, Dennis and Mary Beth Thomas of Durham, NC, Todd and Denise Thomas of Odessa, FL, Adam & Linda Thomas of Conemaugh Township. He is survived by 12 grandchildren, Lindsay and Chris Reade, Lance and Heather Oij, Erik Oij, Zachary Oij, Kyle Thomas, Max Thomas, Grant Thomas, Evan Thomas, Kate & Matt Bridge, Hannah & Connor Holliday, Grace Thomas, Madison Thomas; 5 great grandchildren Calle Oij, Alex Oij, Aubrey Reade, Cooper Reade, Nash Bridge. He is also survived by three brothers, Wade, Tim & Dan and many cousins nieces and nephews. Denny was a 1960 graduate of Conemaugh Township where he met the love of his life, Weez. There must have been something in the air that year as 10 couples got married from that small class and all went on to 50 plus years of marriages. He attended Penn State University and got his degree in Metallurgical Engineering. He immediately went to work for Bethlehem Steel for 30 years, followed by five years at JPitt Steel where he finished as plant superintendent. His working life and story provide a great example and a reminder of how simple and good life can be. Denny worked hard all week and ate dinner with his family every night. He was off most every weekend and spent time, fishing, camping, and enjoying time and adventures with his large “Kaltenbaugh” family. Denny and Weez were proud of their children and the family that they created and raised. They loved to see the family grow and enjoyed every activity in which their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren got involved. Denny had a real passion for the outdoors and was an avid fisherman, bowhunter and wingshooter. He enjoyed golf and played in several leagues as well as many years of darting at the Jerome Legion and throwing horseshoes at the Polish Falcons. He was a sporting clays shooter at the Quemahoning Trap and Skeet club for 25 years and he loved his hunting dogs and the many days spent hunting quail and pheasant. He was very involved with the CT Wrestling Boosters and served as president for many years. He was level-headed, easy to talk to and made friends everywhere he went. He enjoyed a 23-year retirement that was everything he hoped for. He and Weez enjoyed 17 years of amazing travel and family adventures that took them all over the globe. They had a special love for Alaska and made the trip there 12 times including several trips through Canada and the Yukon Territory. A few years after Weez’s passing he moved to Florida where he was close to family and could enjoy the warmer weather. He loved his time in Florida and met many new friends, including Johanna; he played some golf, and joined leagues in horseshoes, corn hole and lawn bowling. He was always social and always active up to and including his last day. Denny spent his last weekend doing what he loved. He was hunting and fishing in Georgia with two of his brothers, two of his sons and several cousins. Denny had commented that it was the best he had felt in years, all his ailments had melted away. He went back to Florida on Monday and spent the day with his daughter; he also had a nice long phone conversation with each of his sons. Tuesday came and he still felt great, he sat out on the back deck and commented on how wonderful it felt in the sun. Moments later he closed his eyes and drifted away, no stress, no worries, back to the love of his life Weez. A Good Man’s Life--Complete. In lieu of flowers, take your loved one on a date, buy a kid a pole and take them out fishing, teach someone about the great outdoors or just take a minute to tell the people that you love how important that they are to you. Please keep Denny and Weez alive in your thoughts and in your stories and may God bless you. A viewing will be held from 4-8PM Friday, April 22 at Hoffman Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 109 Church Road, Davidsville. Funeral service 11AM Saturday, April 23 at Tire Hill Covenant Brethren Church with Pastor Brian Simmons and Pete Kaltenbaugh presiding. Interment Stahl Mennonite Cemetery.
