Obituary for Dale Warren Moon

MOON - Dale Warren, 79, Boswell, died March 8, 2022 at his home. Born November 30, 1942 in Jerome. Son of Owen Allison Moon and Twila Geraldine Keim. Preceded in death by parents; son, Matthew Stephen Moon; sister Aldine F. Thomas; brothers, Gerald O. and Rodney D. and brother-in-law, Donald E. Thomas. Survived by wife, Debra Jeanne (Grant); daughter, Michele D. and husband Robert J. Lamkin, Jr., Hollsopple, PA; grandchildren, Kennedy E. Moon, R. James Lamkin, III, and Hannah J. Lamkin; sister-in-law, Helen R. Moon, TN and brother-in-law’s, Harold “Rick” and wife Katherine Grant, Tallahassee, FL. and Stephen and wife Elizabeth, Williamsburg, VA. Also survived by niece, Joy E. and husband Jeff Roberts; nephew, Scott and wife Sara Thomas; nephew, Bradley and wife Amy Thomas; nephew, Gerry and wife Kathy Moon; nephew, S. Eric and wife Sara Grant; nephew, Steve and wife Tiffany Grant and niece, Anneliese Grant. A 1961 graduate of the former J.B.J. Joint High School, Boswell and received a Bachelor of Science degree from St. Francis University in 1988. A flight chief and aircraft mechanic, specializing in F-4s, U.S. Air Force, from 1962 to 1982. He completed tours at Langley AFB in Virginia, Hickam AFB in Hawaii, DaNang AFB in Vietnam, MacDill AFB in Florida, and Camp New Amsterdam AFB in Holland. A retired case worker in the Somerset County Assistance Office from 1988 to 2003. Dale was known for his sense of humor, jokes, compassion, and helping those in need in practical ways. He had a heart for missions and was active in church wherever he lived, serving as an elder, deacon, Sunday School teacher, treasurer, youth leader, missions committee member, and more at churches including St. Petersburg Grace Brethren Church, Laurel Mountain Grace Brethren Church, and Somerset Alliance Church. He served as a Board Member and Treasurer for many years at Somerset County Child Evangelism Fellowship. He also tinkered with mechanical projects and was dubbed “Take Apart Dale” by his parents. He appreciated outdoor activities such as biking and riding on the Rails to Trails paths, swimming and doing cannonballs in the pool with his grandchildren, gardening and being a Somerset County Penn State Master Gardener. Dale enjoyed cooking and was famous for bringing “Dale’s Baked Beans” to family events and social activities. He was also a history buff and kept his mind active by learning about WWII, watching the History Channel, and listening to gospel and bluegrass singers on the Rural Free Delivery channel. He was much loved and will be missed by his family and friends. Viewing from 2-5PM Sunday at Hoffman Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Boswell. Viewing also from 10AM until time of service 11AM at Somerset Alliance Church, Somerset with Pastors Don Robson and Michael Lookenott presiding. Interment Maple Spring Cemetery.
