Obituary for John P. Pokos

POKOS – John P., Boswell, loving husband and father of three sons, passed away at age 92 on June 14, 2019 surrounded by his family at In-Touch Hospice, Somerset. Born October 20, 1926 in Boswell, the son of John S. and Theresa (Pokos) Pokos. Preceded in death by parents; brother Matthew Pokos; sisters Catherine Pokos, Mary Kalafatis, Teresa Fearon, Ann Kogut, Elizabeth Pokos and Christine Murphy and daughter-in-law Barbara (Martin) Pokos. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years Stella (Kubas) Pokos; brother Louis; sons Mark of Pittsburgh, husband of Linda (Lazor) and father of Collette; Brian of S. Houston, TX, husband of Jeanne (Smith) and father of John and Elizabeth; Paul of Sykesville, MD, husband of Sharon (Pomycala) and father of Katilyn. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. He was a longtime member and usher of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Boswell and currently a member of St. Peters Catholic Church, Somerset. A 1944 graduate of Boswell High School. A US Army Air Force veteran of WWII and a longtime member of Boswell Volunteer Fire Department until his passing. He was a 73-year member of the Boswell American Legion. He achieved the most prestigious Fourth Degree level in the Johnstown Assembly 954 Knights of Columbus. A longtime member of the Hooversville VFW and a lifetime member of the Jenner Rod & Gun Club. Formerly employed as a mechanic for Ruder Amusements of Johnstown, Sheftic Amusements, Profit Vending and American Amusements of Boswell. In recent months, John received several honors for his 75 years of service to the Boswell Volunteer Fire Department including a Certificate of Appreciation by the National Volunteer Fire Council, a Certificate of Appreciation from the State Fire Commissioner, a Citation from the State House of Representatives, and a Citation from the Governor of PA, a certificate from the Court of Special Judges Association of PA and a resolution passed by the Somerset County Commissioners recognizing his years of service. His most prized recognition came from the members of the Boswell Fire Department. Although he no longer fought fires, he remained on the Department’s Board of Directors until his passing. The family would like to thank Somerset Hospital, Laurel View Rehabilitation of Davidsville and In-Touch Hospice of Somerset for the compassionate care they provided during his last days. Viewing from 6-8PM Monday and 2-4 & 6-8PM Tuesday at Hoffman Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 409 Main Street, Boswell where a vigil for the deceased will be held 2PM Tuesday. Funeral Mass 11AM Wednesday at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Somerset with Rev. Fr. Angelo J. Patti celebrant. Committal Mt. Carmel Cemetery, near Jennerstown with military honors by Somerset County Honor Guard.
