BUTCHKO – John M., 95, Hollsopple, died March 21, 2014, at Windber Hospice. Born Dec. 25, 1918, in Hollsopple, son of Martin and Bernadine (Wasko) Butchko. Preceded in death by parents; son, Lance Cpl. John A., who died in 1976, while serving in the Marine Corps; grandson, Michael N. Kovach; and sister, Mary Butchko. Survived by wife of 65 years, Rose M. (Marone); children, Martin J., married to Henrietta (Bucci), Johnstown; and Juliana M., married to Nicholas Kovach, Jenners; grandchildren, Jennifer and Anthony Butchko; Allyson (Butchko), married to Ron Cygnarowicz; and Carolyn Kovach; great-grandchildren, Sophie and Grant Cygnarowicz; and sister-in-law, Mary (Marone), married to Sam Mazzarese, Hollsopple. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the European Theater, where he participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He received four Bronze Stars and other medals for his commitment as a corporal in an anti-aircraft unit. While fighting across Europe, he also traveled when on leave. One of his most memorable experiences was visiting Paris, where he saw the wonder and awe of the Eiffel Tower and the cathedral of Notre Dame. He retired in 1979 as a lineman for Penelec after 37 years of service. Lifelong member of St. Anne Catholic Church, Davidsville, where he served as an usher. Member of Hollsopple Post 8861, VFW and Windber Post 4795, VFW. John enjoyed wood working, fishing, gardening and building puzzles. Viewing will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hoffman Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 109 Church Road, Davidsville, where vigil for the deceased will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Anne Church, the Rev. Father Michael Lewandowski, OFM, Conv., celebrant.
